Small intestine cancer is a rare disease in which malignant (cancer) cells form in the tissues of the small intestine. The small intestine is part of the body’s digestive system, which also includes the esophagus, stomach, and large digestive system removes and processes nutrients (vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, proteins, and water) from foods and helps pass waste. These include adenocarcinoma, malignant tumors that affect the gastrointestinal tract; lymphomas, a type of cancer that originates in the lymphocyte cells of the lymph nodes; leiomyosarcomas, a painful type of cancer that occurs in the intestines; mast cell tumors, which originate in the skin; carcinoid tumors, which develop in the mucous lining of the intestines; gastrointestinal stromal tumors .
Small intestine--carcinoma, sarcoma, or carcinoid. A. Inoperable, unresectable, or recurrent. OR. B. With metastases beyond the regional lymph nodes. OR. C. Small-cell (oat cell) carcinoma. Large intestine (from ileocecal valve to and including anal canal). Most noncancerous tumors of the small intestine do not cause symptoms. However, larger ones may cause blood in the stool, a partial or complete intestinal obstruction, or intestinal strangulation if one part of the intestine telescopes into an adjacent part (a condition called intussusception).
A review of cases of malignant tumors of the small intestine showed that 64% of patients were men, with a median age of years; 47% of the tumors were adenocarcinomas, 28% were carcinoid tumors, 13% were sarcomas, and 12% were lymphomas. Overall five-year survival was 57% and median survival was 53 months. None of the canine intestinal cancer types remain limited to a specific part of intestine, with reports showing that cancer can be distributed all over the small and large intestine. In severe cases, associated organs as the stomach, esophagus, pancreas, liver etc too can be affected, leaving these organs with secondary cancerous developments.
